NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Shares of railroad stocks surged early Tuesday in the wake of news that Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway BRK.A plans to buy Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp. for $34 billion. Burlington Northern shares rallied nearly 29% to $98.05 a piece. Shares of Union Pacific Corp. UNP, Norfolk Southern Corp. NCS and CSX Corp. were all about about 8% in premarket trade. (Corrects spelling of Warren Buffett's name.)
