LONDON -(Dow Jones)- The U.K.'s Prince William has dipped a toe into the world of hedge funds by agreeing to serve as an industry group's philanthropy patron.

The prince, who is second line to the throne behind his father, Prince Charles, for the next three years will direct the philanthropic activities of 100 Women in Hedge Funds, a non-profit organization that has raised more than $ 17 million since 2001 for women's health, education and mentoring.

The group, an association of about 10,000 women working at hedge funds, service providers and in related areas, said it will start concentrating its charitable efforts on three of Prince William's patronages: Centrepoint, a charity for homeless young people; the Child Bereavement Charity, supporting families when a child or parent dies; and Skill Force, a charity providing motivational programs and activities for teenagers.

For one year each, the three charities will be the main recipients of funds raised by 100 Women in Hedge Funds.

Previous recipients of the group's fundraising include New York's Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention and U.S. mentoring group Big Brothers Big Sisters.

100 Women in Hedge Funds holds two gala events each year, in New York and London.
