E.ON SE (EOAN.XE) said Thursday that its subsidiary HanseWerk has commissioned its fourth high-energy cogeneration plant in Hamburg, Germany.

The German company said the combined heat-and-power--or CHP--plant has an efficiency of more than 95% and will produce power for up to 20,000 households and heat for a further 2,800. To boost the efficiency of the plant, HanseWerk has joined forces with GE Jenbacher to develop an innovative plant concept, it said.

E.ON said HanseWerk will incorporate the new CHP unit into its virtual power plant--which allows CHP plants to quickly reduce their output when there is a surplus of power in the grid--over the course of the year.
