SÃO PAULO--Retail sales in Brazil declined in December from the previous month as consumers spent less on furniture and household appliances.

Sales shrank 1.5% compared with November, and rose 2.0% compared with December of 2016, the country's statistics agency said Friday.

Sales of furniture and appliances declined 2.7% in December from November, and sales of books, newspapers and similar products fell 4%.
