Canadian Nuclear Association Welcomes Ontario Progressive Conservative Party Policy on Nuclear Energy

Canada NewsWire

OTTAWA, Nov. 26, 2017 /CNW/ - The Canadian Nuclear Association takes note of the policy platform released this weekend at the Ontario Progressive Conservative (OPC) Policy Convention in Toronto.  In particular, the CNA welcomes the OPC's support of refurbishment of Ontario's nuclear fleet, as well as the continued operation of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station (NGS) until 2024.

"We welcome the OPC's support of nuclear energy in Ontario", said John Barrett, President & CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Association.  "Refurbishment will extend the life of Ontario's baseload source of emissions-free, reliable and affordable electricity for decades to come.  Extension of the Pickering NGS to 2024 is the linch-pin of the refurbishment program.  Together, these signal the OPC's strong commitment to a clean energy/clean air future for Ontarians and to the thousands of skilled, clean-tech jobs that the nuclear brings to the economy."

Currently, the first of the 10 planned reactor refurbishments is underway at Ontario Power Generation's Darlington Nuclear Generating Station.  Ontario's Financial Accountability Office (FAO) last week issued a report that recognized the economic case for nuclear refurbishment in providing Ontarians with reliable, affordable and clean baseload electricity.
