More artists are expected to show up.
Holden, who died Jan. 17 at the age of 60, hosted many of these artists in his years of promoting concerts through his Rhythm & Roots series. Holden specialized in curating true talent, artists who he believed deserved an audience.
He was known for taking big risks, but he did it in the name of artistry. "Music Is Medicine" was more than his slogan; it was his deeply held belief that music could heal. And it was one that he nurtured through the artists he championed, from blues guys who hadn't had a record out in years to newcomers desperate for a break.
Sunday's concert starts at 2 p.m. at one of Holden's favorite venues, Plaza Palomino Courtyard, 2970 N. Swan Road. Admission is a $5 suggested donation to help defray costs.
Holden's Rhythm & Roots series continues Friday with an Afro-Caribbean dance party with Sticks N' Fingers. Tickets are $15 in advance at www.rhythmandroots.org online, or $18 at the door; it's $10 for students with ID.
