Smartmatic Ignites the Dialogue around Latinas Participation in the Technology Industry

Company submitted panel discussion for SXSW 2018

Smartmatic, the world’s leading elections company, is sponsoring a panel submission for SXSW 2018 Panel Picker. The panel includes Samira Saba, Smartmatic Communications Director; Carolina Casares, Yahoo Latin America Senior Director, Head of Media; and Kety Esquivel, Edelman Miami Senior Vice President.

Envisioning a bold future, this panel will discuss the role of Latinas in tech both as users and as leaders of tech companies. “How can technology give voice to Latinas in Latin America and the U.S.? How can Latinas permeate the glass ceiling in Tech? These are some of the questions that we will be addressing during this panel,” said Samira Saba.

Latinos are the fastest-growing and largest minority in America's colleges, but data shows while the number of jobs, types of degrees and level of student interest in STEM careers has continued to increase since 2000 – gender and racial gaps remain unchanged. According to the National Center for Women Information Technology (NCWIT) only 26% of professional computing jobs are performed by women.

This proposed SXSW session will explore ways to increase female participation by bringing a unique point of view from women leaders that work in a male dominant market. It will also bring the specific voice of Latinas to the forefront as only 1% of computing occupations are held by Latinas (Bureau of Labor, 2016). SXSW 2018 participants and the general public are encouraged to vote for this panel via the 2018 SXSW Panel Picker website at (http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote/75907).
